While working in a team environment and under the direct supervision of the President and General Manager, the applicant shall also perform duties in conjunction with the President and General Manager to accurately and efficiently perform various technical activities related to the planning, design, construction and management of various design, study, and construction projects for the company. Reports to the General Manager regarding administrative and policy matters.

The Civil Design Manager will perform a variety amount of work related to the administration and management of projects including designing, engineering documentation, estimating construction costs for civil engineering projects including land development, watermains, sewermains, roads, water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants.

1. Performs a variety of services related to Civil Design Manager by performing the following tasks:
• Carries out a variety of technological functions in various aspects of Civil Engineering, primarily in support of detailed design production drawings.
• Motivating and encouraging internal and external design teams.
• Ensuring drawings and designs are produced on time, and to a high quality.
• Overseeing the design process using technical expertise.
• Working with clients to ensure that their expectations are met.
• Reviewing designs with health and safety in mind.
• Avoiding errors and reducing financial risk during construction.
• Ensuring designs are available to those who need them, at the appropriate time.
• Maintaining thorough documentation of the design process.
• Keeping up to date with changing legislation and codes of practice relating to design.
• Develop project scope, budgets, and design approach for all size projects.
• Completes pre-design work including design briefs and design concepts.
• Produces construction drawings, maps, layouts, and drafting details on working drawings.
• Proficient in the use of AutoCAD 2019 or better, Civil 3D, Rivet, and MS Office.
• Develops, assists, and reviews specifications, construction schedules, and tender documents.
• Knowledge of process hydraulic computation for water and wastewater systems.
• Prepares technical writing, plans, charts, graphs, details, and graphics for proposals, reports, studies, and presentations.
• Assists in the review and coordination of shop drawing approvals.
• Performs quantity take offs in preparation of conducting construction estimates for projects, including Class “A” estimates.
• Conducts field inspections for conformance to approved design and specifications.

2. Provides assistance by overseeing, managing, and monitoring the management of various projects and staff for FNESL by performing the following tasks:

• Prepares correspondence on various technical matters regarding regulations, standards, policies, and procedures to others including First Nation clients, municipalities, consulting firms, contractors, and Federal and Provincial officials.
• Manages and oversees up to 7 designers and / or drafters.
• Conducts quality assurance and quality control on design projects.
• Compiles progress reports, correspondence, work schedules, and follow up work.
• Interacts with clients, contractors, suppliers, and Government officials.
• Assists in contract administration including preparing contract documents, change orders, payment certificates, and plotting contract drawings.
• Assists with preparing tender documents and participates in tender openings.
• Participates as a member of the design team.
• Lead project coordination meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, subcontractors, and vendors.
• Lead in client project requirement meetings, value analysis, and cost estimating.
• Attends project team and site meetings as required.

3. Performs other related responsibilities during the performance of their duties, such as the following:
• Have exceptional teamwork, interpersonal, multi-tasking, problem solving, sound technical, and time management skills and experience.

• Performs other administrative tasks related to the general office procedures.
• Performs other related duties as determined by the President and/or General Manager.

• Knowledge of engineering principles in the water, wastewater, storm water, roads, and other fields would be an asset.
• Knowledge of applicable Provincial and Federal legislation and regulations would be an asset.
• Knowledge of First Nations aspirations and culture would be an asset.

• Adept at using AutoCAD Civil 3D software.

• Be eligible for designation as a certified engineering technologist.
• 15+ years’ experience in the design of civil engineering projects.
• 10 year’s experience in leading and managing a team of designers.
• Sound industry networks amongst the potential client market and a significant reputation in a relevant area of expertise.
• Strong understanding of Canadian Standards and procedures.
• Be a self-starter and motivated individual to successfully complete tasks in a remote/working from home environment.
• Strong understanding of the infrastructure market.
• The ability to prioritize effectively, manage deadlines and exceptional organization skills required for our rapidly changing environment.
• Effective presentation skills with colleagues and clients of all levels.
• Demonstrated track record of successful project delivery.
• Willing to travel on company business with clients.
• To work extended hours to complete assignments when required.
• Short term travel away from the office may be required to participate in project management, staff events, and training.
• Responsible for protecting confidentiality regarding all company work content and office activities.
• MUST have a valid “G” Class license and provide own transportation.
